Traffic Accident Extrication Rescue Fire Operations has participated in numerous traffic accident extrication type situations. Unfortunately, the Irwin Road is one of the more dangerous roadways in Southern California, which means that the Fort Irwin Fire Department is the closest support agency. Over the past four years, we have been involved in several vehicle roll over situations that required extrication and medical support. Our rescue vehicle is fully stocked with the necessary equipment and supplies to perform all such extrications. Our team of firefighters performs training in this area using approved techniques and procedures to ensure the highest level of support. Our crews have had extensive experience at performing emergency medical support for those victims of a traffic accident.
Medical Aid Response In many incidents, the Fire Department is first on the scene of a medical emergency. All of our firefighters are state Certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) who have been through the six weeks of intense training in advanced medical emergencies. They will also be trained in the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) and have been certified by the state of California. Our medical aid responses will be in conjunction with the Weed Army Hospital staff and protocols. All of our Blood Borne Pathogen protocols will be followed to protect the rescuer and the patient. We have, if the situation warranted, delivered a baby on the scene.
Aircraft Crash Rescue/Firefighting All of our firefighters have gone through the California State Certified course in Aircraft Crash Rescue. We will stabilize, if circumstances permit, and remove injured pilots, crewmembers, and passengers from the aircraft. Based on air traffic, Johnson Controls stages a support crew and vehicle at the Bike Lake Airfield due to the response time required to arrive to this location. Although we understand that a second fire station is being considered, we recognize the need to provide this level of support and are prepared to do so.
Confined Space Rescue IAP Fire Services Branch takes the lead in Confined Space Training. We have and will continue to maintain a state certified instructor in our Fire Services Branch. This allows for savings in training dollars, yet provides the necessary on-site capabilities to meet the PWS requirements and train other personnel within the IAP World Services Public Works Division. Our team will provide rescue services for personnel trapped or incapacitated in a confined space.
Burning Building Rescue In conjunction with the Director of Emergency Services (DES), the Fire Services Branch performs training burns to allow for first-hand training throughout the year. Our approach towards readiness is to mix classroom training with practical hands on experience. We further support various mutual aid situations for the county to contribute to the readiness of the surrounding community and further enhance our firefighting skills. We have the experience and the proven capabilities in this area.
High Angle and Low Angle Rescue In the emergency support business, you never no what kind of situation you may face. With this in mind, the Fire Department trains on a regular basis for any High or Low Angle Rescue situation. Areas such as Tiefort Mountain, TV Hill or the NASA Space Tracking Station could require such emergency support. We will have available for recall a technical rescue team to provide high angle rescue. Our ISO 9000 certified plans & procedures reflect, in detail, our processes for addressing both types of rescue support.
Trench Rescue Our fire fighters are state certified in trench rescue and will continue to maintain this certification. We have the experience and continuously train for such emergencies. Trench rescue can be one of the most dangerous forms of rescue. Proper equipment and detailed procedures mixed with realistic training exercises ensure that our team is ready to met any situation.
Swift Water Rescue The understanding of the need for Swift Water Rescue comes quick to anyone visiting the desert during a rain storm. A large down pour mixed with a hardpacked surface, can develop large and swift amounts of water that can cause various emergency support needs. Our firefighters will be well versed in swift water rescue and will provide these services through detailed training (Classroom/Practical). It is a well-known fact that Fort Irwin is subject to flash floods and our expertise in this field will greatly benefit the installation.
